TERM WORDS:
fate: the power believed to control events; destiny
fatalism: the belief that all events are determined by fate.
superstition: irrational belief in the ominous significance of a particular thing, event, etc.
medical ethics: a doctor must not reveal anything a patient has told him about his illness
THE ORACLE AT DELPHI:
- Ancient Greeks believed that they could consult the famous oracle at Delphi about their fate.
- Apollo's wisdom, believing that he knew everything, even about the future.
- Know Thyself= that no man can escape his destiny.
- The word "infuenza" actually means a malign influence from the stars.
FATE NOTES:
- The letter said: Do you believe in fate? Is sickness the punishment of the gods? What forces govern the course of history?
- If you believed in christianity or islam, it was called "faith". But if you believe in astrology or Friday the thirteenth it was superstitious.
- We have seen how they tried to find natural explanations for transformations in nature.
- At the end of the chapter Sophie gets a red scarf with the name Hilde.
